The Chester Workhouses: A Talk by Nick Kevern.Â
Nick Kevern, editor of Inside History, explores the lives of those who experienced life in the House of Industry by the Roodee and the Chester Union Workhouse in Hoole in Victorian Chester.
Stories of short-term inmates, those who depended heavily on the Workhouse and the Master of the House himself, William Aldis, are told using historical records and newspaper reports. Learn about five individuals who called the workhouse their home at some point in their lives, why people entered the workhouse, a celebrity guest who stayed the night and even a murder that occurred on the grounds. An accompanying booklet is also available on the Inside History website.
